Is it haram to change your muslim identity to any other religion inorder to save yourself from tyranny? For example, there’s this person X who is the target of people because of his religion X. So what he does, he changes his name from X to Y. He claims openly that he is now a follower of religion Y, so now people do not harm him. However un reality, he is follower of religion X by heart and he also performs all the religious duties of religion X. Being a follower of religion Y from outside, doesn’t stop him from following the religion X.

Is it a smart way of saving yourself from tyranny or is it cowardice?

In the face of persecution, Muslims are required to migrate. If such a migration is practically impossible, then Muslims are allowed to hide their faith, as long as they have true faith inside their hearts. It should not be categorized as cowardice, as it has been allowed in Quran, but not hiding your faith in the face of persecution and facing all the hardships that may ensue, has a higher rank than the former.
