Here this expression لَهْوَ الْحَدِيْثِ is used in contrast to the verses of the book that are full of wisdom. Hence it will refer to the absurdities and nonsensical things which the mischievous people spread with the intention of leading people away from the Quran. If on one hand, there is time for Salah and on the other hand, you’re busy playing your sports and it’s keeping you from your farz Salah, in that case, your sports will fall in this category. In other normal instances, there’s nothing wrong with playing sports.

No, they do not as a rule of thumb.

But situations where any such activity would indulge you to a level that you forget your religious obligations, that could fall in Haram category in that specific instance and for that specific time.

So it’s due to the ruling of this verse which is why we have been taught since childhood to avoid any form of distraction/entertainment when the Azan is sounded publicly?

Different groups have different reasonings. We however consider it a matter of etiquette, not a religious injunction.

Following audio response of Hassan Ilyas Sahab is also relevant in this context:

But sir lahv-ul-hadees translates to amusement of speech which we can saythat it means musical instruments, and the ayat says “purchasing” of lahv-ul-hadees which makes it more obvious that it means musical instruments. If not, then whats lahv-ul-hadees which a person can “purchase”?

Also we can say that the ahadees in which prophet listened to musical instruments were before the nuzool of this ayat and after this ayat, music was considered impermissible
And hadees in which prophet said “people will consider musical instruments halal” was said later after this ayat of surah luqman

The term Lahw does not simply mean amusement; it signifies something futile or useless. It is then applied to various forms of amusement that may lead to negligence.

The phrase “to buy or purchase” does not exclusively refer to a financial transaction; it also means to opt for, choose, or prefer something.

The verse encompasses anything that diverts one from the right path, even if it involves intellectual or philosophical discussions.

but sir isnt it possible that after this ayat the musical instruments were considered impermissible and prophet said “people wil CONSIDER musical instruments halal” in the hadith?

In principle, anything haram has to qualify the criteria given in verse 7: 33. Musical instruments are not haram unless an immoral activity is done with music, as it is done in some nightclubs. The condemnation of the prophet necessarily belongs to the wrong use of the music. In God’s Shariah, a haram thing had never been allowed. and one cannot imagine that the prophet used to listen to a potentially haram thing.

But sir what can be considered Amusement of “Speech”?

Amusement of speech can be a song, a talk, a gossip, a philosophical debate, a story, a movie, a game, etc.

Amusement is not haram unless it becomes a cause to lead one away from the remembrance of God, or from religion or its duties, then it becomes lahw
