In a Hadith probably talking about stray dogs licking a vessel the prophet pbuh said to wash the vessel 7 times. Nowadays we have antibacterial soaps to wash vessels. Can we just clean the vessel with soap and water twice or thrice and then use it instead of throwing the vessel away, like suggested by some ? We have pet cats, some of whom do hunt rats and occassionally eat it. Does it make the saliva of the cats who eat rats and squirrels najis?

The advice of the prophet (PBUH) is for stray animals which might have filthy mouth. It is not that their saliva itself is a thing of filth like their urine. The Quran mentions that the hunted prey of the trained beast of prey like dogs, is halal and pure, which does have some saliva of theirs in it, when they catch the prey in their mouth.
