My sister is in her 30s and has always been a very gassy person. Usually she repeats wudhu 2-3 times because as soon as she leaves the bathroom she will pass gas. She normally passes more gas than the average person (7-8 times an hour). She usually only manages to pray the fard quickly after doing Wudhu. Sometimes she manages to pray in one go. She has also tried to change her diet, but she has always been gassy. She does not meet the diagnostic criteria for IBS, nor is she lactose intolerant.

What can she do in this case? She recently had a baby and it has become more difficult for her to do wudhu so many times.

I have read that those with a continuous issue can do wudhu once and pray. However, in her case, she is not sure if this applies because she can physically pray the prayer without passing gas – it usually just takes 1-3 wudhus on average. She’s just a naturally gassy person and not sick.

    What can she do?

She can make wudu before each prayer. If during the prayer she passes gas and is certain about it then she can make the wudu again and repeat the prayer.

This is what she has been doing, but lately it has been causing a lot of frustration because she passes gas in nearly every prayer.

In that case one wuzu for the entire prayer should suffice.

If she manages to pray a single prayer without passing gas, does this exemption expire for the next prayer? Our main confusion is that this is not constant, it is possible to pray without passing gas occasionally, but this is very unpredictable.

She says she feels guilty and does not know if Allah will accept her prayers. At the same time she is emotionally exhausted and keeps pushing herself to re-do wudhus and doubts the concession of doing a single wudhu.

As a follow-up, does this apply to stress incontinence too? Many women, after having babies have a weaker pelvic floor. Sometimes (not every day) she feels some incontinence. Does she have to repeat wudhu since she has no control over this?

In principle, a person who is well should renew his / her wudu if it’s broken in the middle of a prayer and they’re certain about it. However, if a person is unable to do that due to health challenges then they can make one wudu for each prayer. Unfortunately, I can’t make the decision for your sister. She will have to decide for her own self depending upon her situation.
