Could you shed some light on the true meaning of this narrative in where ali رضي الله عنه was supposedly called the protective guardian of the Muslims as muhamamd صلى الله عليه وسلم was? Of course you know how our shia friends interpret this

It was a dispute between Ali and his companions when they were coming back from Yemen. Ali had taken back from them some clothes which they had taken before the revenue of Zakat was distributed in the presence of the prophet. But he had taken a slave girl for himself and had sex with her. Then the people objected that why he took the slave girl for himself while they were not allowed to take some cloths. This dispute was then solved by the prophet and his sanctioned by saying that Ali took from his share. still the grudge was not removed. so the prophet said, whoever takes me his Mola, Ali is his Mola too.
Mola in this context is, friend and close one because this was said to the ones who were estranged with Ali.
