No prophet started preaching before receiving prophethood. The destruction of the idols was the last episode of his preaching to his people, after that it was clear that he was the specially protected prophet of Allah who stayed safe in the fire. Before it we know at the time of preaching to his father, in Sura 19 verse 41 onwards, it starts mentioning Abraham a true prophet. then he mentions that this knowledge had come to him from God (verse 43). Since the episode with father took place before his final episode of destruction of the idols, resultantly, he was the prophet before the destruction of the idols.
