It is said that wealth is fitnah.

In a narration prophet Muhammad is reported to have said that My poor companions will enter paradise 40 years before rich ones.

In another narration he is reported to have said, only soil of grave will fill up bani Adam’s stomach.

In a narration he is reported to have said, your wealth is only that which you ate and wear, all otherwise is of your nominee.

What we get from the life of prophet Muhammad himself that he lived in extreme poverty.

So is living in poverty or with least means any noble than being rich in religion.

    What is ‘Juhad’ then.

    JazakAllah

    Quran says:

“Give to the near of kin his due, and also to the destitute and the traveller. And do not squander your wealth wastefully, for the wasteful are Satan’s brothers; and Satan is ever-ungrateful to his Lord. And if you have to disregard [those in need] because you are still seeking your Lord’s bounty which you are hopeful of, then speak to them softly. Neither tie your hand with the neck nor leave it totally loose that you earn reproach and be reduced to indigence. Indeed your Lord gives abundantly to whom He pleases and sparingly to whom He pleases. He surely is aware of His servants; He is observing them”. (Quran 17:26-30)

    And

Ask them [O God’s Messenger]: “Who has forbidden you the adornments which the Almighty has created for His servants, and who has forbidden the wholesome among the edibles?” Tell [them]: “They are for the believers in this world [but God has also given the disbelievers a share in them]; but on the Day of Judgement, they shall be theirs alone. [The disbelievers shall have no share in them.]” Thus do We explain Our revelations for those who want to know. Tell [them]: “My Lord has only forbidden all lewd acts, whether overt or hidden and usurping the rights of others and wrongful oppression and that you worship with Him what He did not sanction and that you fabricate something about God what you know not“. (Quran 7:32-33)

As far as life of Prophet Muhammad (SWS) is concerned, there was a window of time when Prophet (SWS) chose to live a simple life, after migration to medina, in solidarity and to support the ‘muhajireen‘ of that time, specifically those who were residing in Masjid-e-Nabwi (famously known as ashab-e-suffa). As as leader, Prophet (SwS) took it upon himself to provide for them and to not enjoy any luxury until things started to get better after conquest of khaibar and onwards:
