Salah and Prayer (‘Dua‘) not being accepted for fourty days in case of Alcohol consumption in Ahadith means that Allah will put that person’s Salah/Prayer acceptance on hold for fourty days to see whether one has sincerely repented from this sin and whether he relapses or not. Since alcohol addiction can result in a relapse, so fourty days are to ensure one’s serious repentance and also consistency in one’s repentance. This is in accordance with Quran (9:94 AND 9:105).

The same can be said for other intoxicants because they have the same effect as alcohol, in terms of intoxication, addiction and relapse.
