You can respond by saying ‘Hi’, ‘Assalamualaikum’, ‘Peace be upon you’ or any other greeting you find appropriate for the situation.

By the word “any” , do you mean that we can say jai shree ram too?

In what situation would you find that to be ‘appropriate’?

Considering the situation in India, where there is fear of life and death?

If one is compelled to utter words of kufr then there’s no problem with that as long as they believe in their hearts.
Quran 16:106:
[Believers! Those among you] who disbelieve after believing, if they are compelled and their hearts are content on belief, then there is no penalty for this.
