They are called house of Allah because there 5 times daily congregational prayers are held. They are of two types, one for daily congregational prayers and can be built anywhere, even around every street corner. The second ones are mosques fixed by the state for Friday and Eid Prayers, they are in complete control of the state. Calling mosques house of Allah is a metaphorical and spiritual expression for these places. In addition to Salah, other activities like aitekaf (seclusion) and other ibadah can also done like Quran recitation, Nafal Salah etc.
