Moderator June 17, 2022 at 1:55 amThere’s nothing wrong with reading such novels as long as they are not openly talking about vulgarity which falls under Fawahish. (talking about bodyparts in a vulgar way or imagery which falls under fawahish category and talking about specific person in context of intimate relationships etc.)

So the question is, is it haram to read such literature, or should it be avoided on the grounds of preventive measure?

And if by Haram you mean whether it is a major sin or a minor sin, then latter would be more appropriate categorization for reading this kind of literature.

Member June 20, 2022 at 11:20 amI actually meant, does reading such literature actually falls in the fawaish category?.
According to my knowledge, For something to be haram, it should fall in the Fawaish category.
And something fall in the fawaish category when the person himself is involved in that act. Like, If a person commits certain acts with someone that leads to zina, it will be considered as minor sin, and if zina occurs, it will be major sin.
But reading such literature can’t be termed as haram as there is no real participation of any person in it. Hence it does not fall in the fawaish category.
But a person himself or scholars can make prohibition on the grounds of preventive measure. So it must be a disliked act and not a sin but it can compel a person to commit a sin, so a person should avoid.

Moderator June 20, 2022 at 1:58 pmSuch activities are an extension of Fahawish (watching porn, reading erotica etc.) hence not calling it a sin would be other extreme. The most appropriate categorization I think would be a minor sin, which are sins but also have an opportunity to be forgiven in case a person refrains from major sins.

When a person himself engages in an act that leads to zina is categorized as minor sins, then would it be appropriate to categorize reading, or watching such things in the same bracket?.

Moderator June 21, 2022 at 2:01 amFormer are acts which form premises (‘muqadmaat‘) for a major sin (‘Zina‘), while latter are individual acts where one is enagaged in voyeurism while others are performing that major sin. Considering the nature of both acts, which is different from eachother but does end up being a sinful act of lower intensity becuase of their indirect association with Major Sin in one way or another.
