  • Advanced Degrees And Income Earned On The Basis Of Fake Educational Degree

Posted by Rehman Ali on June 20, 2022 at 8:58 am

If somebody wishes to study a PhD program or a Master level program abroad, but during his previous masters and bachelor’s degree he learned, took lectures and sometimes cheated in exams as well. During his thesis, he used a made up data and run tests and cleared his thesis. Now after years, this person is constantly thinking what shall be done now in order to earn a purified income. This is a sincere repentance from him.

    – Can he go for PhD in other country, will it be like taking someone else’s rights?

    – Or, should he only use his intermediate, and take a lower level course abroad in order to be taking less benefit from such previous degrees in which he cheated?

    – Or he shall not use any of the degree at all?

What is the right step here as per the DEEN ISLAM?

If one gets a job on the basis of fake degree or through deception then later during that job If one has developed enough competency for the job then income earned from that Job would be Halal. However, one will be held accountable for the initial act of deception done to get the job or fake degree in the first place. One should try to repent to God for this mistake and should try to make good for that deception through whatever means available.

Please refer to the following response of Ghamidi Sahab from 1:06:30 to 1:08:03

Assalamu Alaikum, brother jazak ALLAH for sharing answers. However, these are different than what I am seeking. I want to know that in this stage (which I mentioned in the question), what should one do without any fear? What is the best thing that can done here? should we move forward with them and can study further? also, if one gets a study visa based on the previous education with cheating, then the work he will be able to do while study will be halal?

I want to know the criteria that makes income either halal or haram.

Also, I want to know if using such documents is like taking one’s right?

The act of deception has already been committed, for which one will be accountable on the day of judgement. Therefore, sincere continuous repentance, making good any loss caused to the other party (if possible) and Infaq are the options available for that, on the hopes that they may result in forgiveness on the day of judgement.

Future degrees genuinely earned through effort would be Halal and so is the income from the job gotten on the basis of those genuine degrees. And if a job is earned through a fake degree, then response shared in the first comment would apply.

Our respectable scholar Dr. Irfan Shahzad Sahab ( @Irfan76 ) might also give some useful advice as to which option is more suitable in this regard.

Jazak ALLAH brother. I do think the same that future degrees earned through sincerity would be halal. However, to get the admission in the future degrees, one is required to use a previous degree or certificate. The problem arises from here at this spot. This is the point where the true guidance is needed as this would be a matter of a whole future.

      1) Can we move forward to next (higher) degrees while using the previous (where cheating occured) degrees?

      2) IF not, then how much going back is needed? till intermediate or matric?

      3) And, If we make a decision based on a fatwa or scholarly advice, and make efforts to not cheat ever again and do the right thing, will all the efforts or hard work be multiply by 0 if the degrees were actually not supposed to be used in the first place?

      4) Lastly, if we are confused whether using such degrees is violating others’ rights or not, how should one see this?

I know these are plenty of questions but ALLAH will give you khair insha ALLAH for answering and helping.

We can get direction from Ghamidi Sahab’s response shared above that despite the fact job was attained on the basis of fake degree but the future income from that job if done competently would be Halal. The same can be applied to future degrees too, if attained through hardwork and effort, would be Halal and so will the income earned on the basis of that advanced degree. The intitial sin of deception will not affect the future acts done honestly, but one will be held accountable for that initial act.

Thank you brother thanks a lot! and one last thing. Just feel the situation, and things that have done in the past (not something that we are about to do), can the situation mentioned above still falls under the category of violating other’s rights? Like, is it a sin between the person and ALLAH or does it include haqooq ul ibad as well? I am asking so one do not start over thinking the matter.

And…. if it is a matter of haqooq ul ibad as well, so in this stage, should one use a LOW LEVEL degree in order to gain a little advantage of the degrees, OR… the person can utilize his highest degree as well and study the next advanced degree with honesty?

Matlab kia kum se kum level ki degree means INTERMEDIATE tak use krna theek hoga, ya banda Master’s ki b toba k bad use kr skta hai PHD ya another Master’s k liye? Kitna faida lia ja sakta hai toba k bad?

Since it involves an act of deception therefore it definitely has an element of haqooq-ul-ibad in it.

It can be argued that one can develop or have competence to pursue advanced degrees despite having a fake lower level degree. Lower level degree being fake can help one only get admission in a higher level degree but after that, it all comes down to one’s own competence, if one is pursuing that degree without using any unfair means.

At the end of the day, it is the person who has to decide whether he wants to use that degree to move forward or not use it at all. I think one can use it if one has competence to attain that degree through fair means and through hardwork. However, one should try to make good any loss caused by that initial act of deception if possible in any way and should repent to God becuase he will be held accountable for that act. This is in line with Ghamidi Sahab’s response shared above.

However, if one chooses to not pursue any higher degree on the basis of fake lower level degree on the fear of accountability, then this act is more pious if it is practically possible for one to do that. However, this will not absolve one of the intial act of deception already committed but can become one of the contributing factors in attainign forgiveness for the initial act of deception.
