  • Ghamidi Sahab's Statement That Woman Is A Blessing/Naimat And Man Is A Need

    Asalamualaikum,

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KkQ0A5wq9s

In the video linked, at the time stamp 53:21, Ghamidi Sahab says, “Woman, for a man is a blessing and Man, for a woman is a need.”

I have trouble understanding how and why this would be. Is there anything in the Quran that would attest to this statement?

A woman does not inherently need a man to survive (at 01:08:32, he even agrees that women have the liberty to choose whether to get married or not). So how would it be appropriate to say that a man is a woman’s “need”?

Men can also need women in various circumstances (fulfilling sexual relations, companionship, work etc). This can also be applied to women, so would it not be that men need women and women need men rather than just the latter? Similar to how both are blessings for each other?

    JazakAllah,

    Salam!

@UmerQureshi If I understood the video correctly, it is possible that men can be both a need and blessing for women according to Ghamidi Sahab? Because that isn’t negated by him in the video, he just stated that Qur’an mentioned women as blessing because they are a major one.

Also what about the point of view of other scholars that Qur’an only mentions women because the audience was generally men? And henceforth men being a blessing for women audience is implied?

This statemet has been made in a holistic sense when all components of a socio-familial fabric are seen in tandem and in the light of history, so in that broader picture, no one can deny this statement that women indeed are a great blessing of Allah in every relationship that they become a part of. This doesn’t necessarily mean that men are useless or have no element of blessing in them for women, but when seen in comparison, then women are justifiably called a blessing. This is a separate argument in itself.

Regarding the point that because of male dominated society of Arabs, several masculine phrases are used to align with social construct of that time and for text to be receptive for the audience of that time as well. But along with women, Quran also mentions children, wealth, horses etc. as a blessing for men and how their love has a potential to lead man astray. It is true that it has masculine dominance, but at the same time this doesn’t negate this fact that when women, children, wealth etc. are seen in isolation from this masculine dominance, are not blessing in their very existence.
