  • Loss Of Pre-birth Memory By Allah In The Context Of Covenant Of Alast

Posted by Nadeem Minhas on July 4, 2022 at 1:05 am

I do not remember reading anywhere in Quran that our pre-birth memory was erased by Allah as planned.

What is the source of information that our memory was erased?

If it was erased, what was the purpose of Allah in taking pledge from human beings that he is the only god?

It is obvious it is erased as we don’t remember it. That was the manifestation of our natural response to call of God to recognize Him as our God, which is still there in our nature. The is an information and reminder which God tells us to bother that our nature still do the same

Thanks Dr Irfan for your reply. I still find it intriguing that such an important thing, such as, the loss of memory for all the pledges and advice Allah gave us is not mentioned in Quran. I am confused why Allah took pledge from human, warned against devil and told us that he is sending us here for a test and then erased our memory and did not mention such important thing in his book.

Because it was too obvious to mention. God told us what we didn’t know because we forgot it.

Dr. Irfan. Normally a reminder is given to someone who is capable of recalling a memory. We are not capable of recalling this memory. If you ask a non-Muslim to recall such memory, he will only find this concept amusing.

You may say, it is built into us and someone has to feel it, but the fact is that there is no such feeling in us.

We have its effects. as soon as we start using our intellect, we start asking about the creator. and the answer that God created all this is the most satisfying answer we feel, just like the day God asked us about Him and we instantly replied He was our Lord.

Ehd-e-Alast (the covenant of Alast) was mentioned not just to remind us of that event in particular, but to remind us of the fact that the believing-self or the potential to believe in a creator has already been incorporated in our nature(fitrat). That event did happen, but the same event has been used by God to remind us of that part of our fitrat which innately contains this tendency to believe in a creator.

This topic has been discussed at length along with all other dimensions of Fitrat (nature) in ‘Response to 23 Questions‘ series by Ghamidi Sahab. I would request you to please do follow that series for an in-depth understanding of the said matter.
