  • Interpretation Of Quran And Overall Religion As Per One's Own Understanding

Religion in its beliefs and its practical form like prayer Fast Hajj etc are agreed upon with all their essentials and they have been communicated through generations to generations. Scholars have different understandings of these rituals like a certain pert is Fard or nafal but they do accept them as religion. Also they may differ in details of beliefs but essentially they believe what Quran says in its simple and clear way.

Thank you Dr. Shahzad Sb, could you please elaborate the second part, (can scholars interpret (تفسیر) and point out their own view on every single verse of Quran).

Different Musfassarin developed different principles of Tafseer or hermeneutics, which caused different interpretations of verses.

Shaan e Nuzul, out of context interpretations, reading Quran in the perspective of Akhbar e Ahad, (Ahadith), theological interpretation of verses ignoring the linguistic significance of language, etc are some of the reasons which causes differences.

Our emphasis is to read the Quran in its own historical and immediate context, according to the established rules of language with the knowledge of styles of classic Arabic. Despite these rules some may differ with each other on some occasions, but such differences can be resolved if the principles are agreed upon.

Once again thank you so much Dr. Shahzad Sb. could you please en-lighten me more on What are those agreed principles, A Persian scholar of religion says that Quran is وحی since came in condition of dream (رویاء کی حالت ) to Muhammad puh so it should be interpreted. According to his knowledge حدود limits e.g. stoning, cutting hand of thief …should be interpreted it is not acceptable in this era, likewise hell fire punishments and Heaven etc.

can we say that “There is no official, dominant, unique and correct understanding of religion? – to say that this understanding of religion is correct and other understandings are invalid?)

    Regards

There are a number of narrations that are used by the orthodoxy ( those who claim to be orthodox ) to silence disagreement , esp independent thinking.

“The hand of God is over the majority” , “Allah will never unite my ummah upon misguidance” etc but it’s clear they are later fabrications that were forged for social unity at a time when the community was rife with political, theological and legal differences. In a way, this narration was used to standardize the religious discourse. If we examine the groups who claim to be from Ahle Sunnah wal Jamah, each group has serious differences with each other. To give an example, take the religious groups we find in Pakistan. Brelwis, Deobandis and Ahle Hadith ( 3 dominant sects ) each considers the other to be misguided. If they ever unite, it’s to attack a common opponent. Otherwise in reality there’s no entity called Ahle Sunnah wal Jamah. This label has found a place in the hadith literature so it’s convenient to label ones sect with it.

You don’t really need any great proof to show there isn’t a standard version of Islam. The religion Islam exists in the minds and deeds of the Muslims. If all the Muslims on the earth disappeared and the people left didn’t care to read the Quran or Islamic literature, the religion would die. Islam isn’t a person, it doesn’t eat, sleep or drink and it certainly doesn’t exist in some abstract ideal detached from community. Islam is the sunlight, the people are the prism and the sects are all the different colors that split and emerge from the prism.

This is a science which cannot be told here. Yiu have to consult the books on hermeneutics to know what are the differences of principles of Tafseer.

There is no official or agreed upon set of principles. It is because the first test is the rest of knowledge and understanding. And it is carried out this way.
