In Quran in numerous places, it is mentioned that Allah destroyed entire communities as punishment. How is it a punishment..

1.when everyone has to die anyway. 2. The one who are punished actually die a quick and least painful death vs others who are not punished die more painful death due to old age, disease and slow painful death.

    3. Also when entire community is annihilated the who families die at the same time…which is a blessing vs others who are not punished their families have to suffer seeing loved one die and then they have to suffer financial and other hardships.

    4. When the entire community is annihilated the innocent and good people die too and suffer the wrath of Allah equally.

So how is annihilation of entire communities a punishment?

When scourge of God came after Ittmam ul Hujjah, and the entire community was annihilated, the good people did not die in that, they are relieved from the scourge. The Quran tells

“Then [when that day arrives,] We protect Our messengers and those also who have professed faith. In a similar way, it is Our responsibility to protect those who have accepted faith.” (10:103)

This annihilation is the beginning of their punishment, then they are sent to more sever punishment:

“Thus God saved him from the evil of his schemes but the people of the Pharaoh were surrounded by an evil torment [after this:] the fire of Hell before which they are brought day and night and the Day the Hereafter arrives, it will be ordered: “Admit the companions of the Pharaoh into the worst torment. (40:45-46)

However, innocent kids die too. But their death is but a death just like they die during any natural calamity. But it is punishment for the sinners, because it is announced by God that this is punishment.

God has to demonstrate his punishment to make others aware that such court of justice will be erected in the hereafter too. So, He chose this way to punish the nations.

The believers who say behind live a good worldly life as a community and they are blessed by God.

God said: “Disembark Noah with Our peace and blessings, upon you and also upon those communities which will come into existence from those with you.” And [after this,] there are some communities which We shall provide for in future; then [because of their misdeeds,] a painful torment from Us will seize them as well. (11:48)

Dr. Irfan, don’t you think living or surviving on this Earth is more of a punishment no matter how comfortable you live and how rich you are. Every person has to go through heat, cold, hunger, disease and old age. On the other hand those who die can rest as dead until the day of judgement.

So, for bad people death itself doesn’t look like punishment as they may not be sent to hell until judgement day. So aren’t they better off dead than good people living on this earth?

Also I can’t find the ayah but it says in Quran that when Allah annihilated, good people also die.

The rebels who rejected the truth after the Hujjah is completed, their punishment never stops as I mentioned above. They receive punishment after death and then will be sent to hell on the day of judgement.

“life is a punishment itself” is a subjective notion. Life is not a punishment but a test. if it were taken as punishment by people they would have liked to end it but we see that a very few people commit suicide to get rid of their life.
