  • Adam Created From Different Color Of Mud Collected From Around The World

Posted by muhammad saad on August 29, 2022 at 10:31 am

Abu Moosa Al-Ash‘ari, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said, “Indeed Allah, The Almighty, created Aadam from a handful that He took from the whole of the earth. So the children of Aadam are in accordance with the earth: some of them are red, some are white, some are black, some are yellow, and some are a mixture (between these different colors); some are smooth; some are rough, some are bad and some are good.” [Ahmed, Abu Dawood, at-Tirmithi and Ibn Hibbaan. This is the wording of Ibn Hibbaan]

    @UmerQureshi is this a Israeli tradition ?

It is reported Marfuan (as a saying of Prophet Muhammad (sws)) through a strong chain of narration from Sahabi Abu Musa Ashari (rta). It is also reported Mauqufan (as a saying of Sahabi) from Abdullah ibn-e-Abbas (rta). The details on narrations and their references can be found in the [Foot Note 1].

The concept that human beings are created from dust/soil/earth/mud can be found in previous scriptures as well. For example, In Bible, it is mentioned:

And God said, ‘Let the earth make (yatsar) living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.’ And it was so. God made (asah) the beasts of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind; and God saw that it was good.” (Genesis 1:24)

Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7)

Out of the earth the LORD God formed (yatsar) every beast of the field and every bird of the sky.(Genesis 2:19)

Quran has not entirely negated this idea, instead Quran complemented it by adding more detail to it. For example, in Quran, it is mentioned:

[It is He] Who has excelled in the creation of everything. He began creating a human being from clay; then carried on his progeny from an insignificant fluid; then perfected it and blew into it from His spirit and for you made ears [for hearing], eyes [for seeing] and hearts [for understanding] – seldom are you grateful. (Quran 32:7-9)

[If those who deny you do not believe in this, then they should see]: “We had created a human being from the essence of clay”. (Quran 23:12)

Then it has used words like صَلْصَالٍ كَالْفَخَّارِ (from clay which rings like its dry pieces) and صَلۡصَالٍ مِّنۡ حَمَاٍ مَّسۡنُوۡنٍ (with a stinking mud that rings) in Quran (55:14) and Quran (15:26).

and it is He Who has grown you from the earth in such an elaborate way”.(Quran 71:17)

Therefore, the hadith under consideration needs to be understood in the light of these Quranic verses. And when seen in the light of Quran, this saying of Prophet (sws) is a metaphorical expression of how human beings were originally created from Earth and just the way we see diversity in earth’s colours, the same diversity can be observed in human beings as well. There is nothing wrong with the content of this Hadith, instead it is perfectly in line with Quranic depiction of human creation, with a beautiful literary touch.

    [Foot Note 1]

Following is the text of Hadith under consideration:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Indeed Allah Most High created Adam from a handful that He took from all of the earth. So the children of Adam come in according with the earth, some of them come red, and white and black, and between that, and the thin, the thick, the filthy, and the clean.”

Through one primary chain of narrators from Auf bin Abi Jamila from Qasama bin Zuhair from Abu Musa Ashari (rta). The chain of transmission is Sahih and all the narrators are Siqqa.

There is a similar mauquf narration narrated from Abdullah ibn-e-Abbas (rta) as well (i.e. as a saying of Sahabi Abdullah ibn-e-Abbas):

Ibn-e-Abbas (rta) said that God Almighty created Adam on Friday after Asr from the durum of the earth, so he was named Adam. Do you not see that his children are white, black, good and evil.

    Al-Asma u wal-Sifat by Bayhaqi-817, Ibn-e-Asakar in Tarikh-e-Damishk-7/375 and 376
