    Hello assalamualaikum,

There is a Hadith that i came across

Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Abdur-Rahman bin Abu Husain:

That the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Indeed, Allah will surely admit three into Paradise by a single arrow. Its maker who seeks good by his making it, the one who shoots it, and the one who holds arrows for him.” And he said: “Practice archery and practice riding, and the you should practice archery is more beloved to me than that you should ride. All idle pastimes that the Muslim man engages in are falsehood(Batıl), except for his shooting of his bow, his training of his horse, and his playing with his wife, for they are from truth.”

    Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1637

Can you explain what does this Hadith mean? What does Batil word here means?

Firstly, some people said that Batıl word used does not mean Haram but useless and void of benefit etc, but if we read whole Hadith, then it would mean that all are void of benefit except these 3 but sometimes we feel like other forms of entertainment can also be beneficial, like other sports or mind relaxing activities that charge you up for other activities. And also there were some other entertainment activities that is said that prophet did besides them like racing with Hazrat Ayesha and making jokes with sahabah. Or approving of Abyssinians to dance or play.

Secondly, if a man uses this Hadith to interpret from it that the general ruling is that the entertainment and idle pastimes, are not permissible except these 3 and ALSO except what prophet did or approved of when others did in front of him from the entertainment like singing of girls and dancing of Abyssinians. What would be said to such person that how they are understanding wrong?

Can such prohibiting boundary for entertainment can be fetched from this Hadith?

First it is necessary to maintain, that Hadith is not source to get general rules and principles from it. principles of Deen are taken from Quran and the perpetual, consensual Sunnah of the prophet. Ahadith are the applications of these rules but narrated mostly without their context which changes the whole scenario. Ahadith are words of the narrators who sometimes inadvertently misunderstood or mixed up. The prophet while telling an advice did not cover up all the aspects of the topic as we do in lectures. These are occasional sayings and addressed to deal with a particular issue at hand. So it is useless to extract all aspects from a single narration.

The principle of entertainment is that It should not be unethical and should not interfere with some greater goal as we see in this hadith about preparation of war.
