  • Poetry Said With Some Heretic Background

    Assalamualaikum

In e.g sufism, poetry is written with a conception of God as one’s love (that we have to reach God and may get annihilated), but if we ignore that background knowingly or unknowingly then it is a simple love poetry. So should we be reluctant in saying or listening that poetry written with such background which one may consider heretic?

Reading and listening to a heretic expression is not forbidden, so no question to be reluctant with or without the background of the poetry.

But doesn’t it come under the Ayah 7:33

To know about vice and evil is not evil, to accept and act upon it is forbidden. To avoid a bad or to counter it, we need to know it, and study it. Even we appreciate the imagination and aesthetics of such poetry with the caution that it is not actually right.

What about doing that type of poetry?

It would be committing the forbidden act, which is haram.

But sir in poetry things are used metaphorically ( even heretic themes ) they dont mean as they are written

I would also like to ask in addition, is there a difference in prohibition of this in terms of privacy vs public? i.e writing questionable themed poetry (or any fiction) for personal consumption/satisfaction rather than writing and sharing with others to consume and spread questionable ideas?

Not just in poetry but in all forms of art these kind of themes are used metaphorically

Metaphorical expressions are allowed if they do not mean the actual shirk or something forbidden.
