Recently Hamza Yousuf at a conference in Vatican City suggested that artificial intelligence is dangerous and people will lost jobs and purpose in life. He considered it as an innovation that is prohibited in Islam.

He gave historical examples where both Islamic and non Islamic leaders ban innovations that could destroy human jobs.

    What’s your opinion and insights?

    Thanks – Bilal

People can have their preferences and religious leaders are not an exception.

For something to be considered prohibited in Islam, it has to have its basis in the sources of Islam. In short, other than dietary restrictions in Islam, prohibitions fall in the category of immoralities. For details please see:

Reduction in jobs is not a basis for considering something prohibited. Almost all inventions for the masses seem to have an effect of reducing jobs. From the invention of the printing press, to automobiles, to readymade garments, to computers – everything had the effect of reducing jobs. However, most such inventions also create new opportunities as well as a lot more new jobs than they take away.
