Sociologists tell a somewhat different story of religion than the Abrahamic revealed religions. A contemporary author is Reza Aslan and in his book God: A Human History, he does the same by starting from our primitive stage of animism, running through monotheism (which arose as an external need for empires and their better control), finally to sufi thought as our thought advanced.

What is the flaw in this argument?

The problem with the argument is that it is completely speculative in nature.

In contrast, on the basis of his extensive research spanning 12 volumes, a German anthropologist Wilhelm Schmidt, in “Der Ursprung der Gottesidee” (The Origin of the Idea of God) and “Ursprung und Werden der Religion” (The Origin and Growth of Religion) shows that the idea of monotheism can be traced in all cultures including African, Australian aboriginals, Native Americans Indians, Chinese, etc. throughout the known history of the mankind. These cultures originated as monotheistic, acknowledging the existence of one supreme God who holds people accountable on the basis of morality. Unfortunately, these works have not been fully translated in English even though they were written in early to mid 1900s.

Dr. Winfried Corduan has also recently written “In the Beginning God” on this subject basing his works on Schmidt’s and Lang’s research.
