    Assalamualaikum

    Quran says:

And recall when Abraham was put to trial [296] by His Lord in a few things [297] and he fulfilled them.[298] He said: “I have decided to appoint you the leader of mankind.” [299] “And what of my descendants?” asked Abraham. He replied: “This covenant of Mine does not apply to the unjust among them.” [300]]

According to this that leadership will not continue in the “unjust.” And Abraham AS had Isaac and Ishmael AS. Why did Bani Ishmael get this leadership very late and why Isaac’s AS second son Esau didn’t get that leadership. Why only sons of Jacob AS?

Like do we get anything that his other sons’ descendants except Jacob AS’s descendants became unjust?

The story mentioned in Bible between Esau and Prophet Jacob is quite disturing and can in no way be attributed to a prophet of Islam. May be Dr. Irfan Shahzad Sahab ( @Irfan76 ) can shed some insight into this matter.

This selection of one or a few or one after another among a family is a perpetual trait of God. He chose Ham and Sam first before Japath to come afore on the world stage as history tells.

He selected only two sons of Abraham for prophethood and not others. So, no law of selection is associated with them initially. He never told the reason. He just said that did it according to His knowledge, see 44: 32

    وَلَقَدِ اخْتَرْنَاهُمْ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ عَلَى الْعَالَمِينَ

And had knowingly given them preference to the people of the world

Ghamidi saheb comments on this verse:

The Israelites were chosen to bear witness to the truth before the rest of the world the way God selects prophets from human beings. It is for this selection that their preference over other nations is mentioned. This is specified at many instances in the first two chapters of the Qur’ān. This selection is not done haphazardly, but on the basis of the qualities and traits which are found in an individual or a nation. The words عَلٰي عِلۡمٍ of the verse refer precisely to this aspect.”
