  • Hadith: Woman Is Awrah

    Asselamu aleykum,

I’ve seen this question before and the replies by Sir Irfan, but, i think we need more analysis on this topic.

Abdullah narrated that The Prophet said:

“The woman is Awrah, so when she goes out, the Shaitan seeks to tempt her.” (Tirmidhi 1173)

    (Website:- https://www.islamicboard.com/prayer/134277313-socks.html#post1082689)

The free woman who has attained the age of majority is obliged to cover her entire body during prayer, apart from her face and hands, because all of her is ‘awrah. If she prays and any part of her ‘awrah becomes uncovered, such as a shin or foot or all or part of her head, then her prayer is invalid, because the Prophet said:

“Allaah will not accept the prayer of a woman who has started to menstruate, except with a khimaar (covering)” (Reported by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, Ibn Maajah and al-Tirmidhi, with a saheeh isnaad)

Abu Dawud reported from Umm Salamah that she asked the Prophet about a woman who prayed wearing a dir’ (chemise or upper garment) and a khimaar (head cover), but no izaar (lower garment). He said: “The woman is ‘awrah.”

All of these hadiths or traditions does not only seems to regard women as ‘Awrah’ (something which should be hidden), but also it seems that the awrah of a free women is different from the slave women.

Kindly clarify the contexts and authenticity of these hadiths.

    Thanks.

@Irfan76 All these hadiths seems to regard women as ‘Awrah’ (something which should be hidden), and also it seems that the awrah of a free women is different from the slave women, by reading these hadiths, because it says “free women”. I want to understand the contexts and authenticity of these hadiths, According to Farahi perspective.

    Not hidden, but covered.

At that time, it was not possible to change the culture of the slave girls, the way we see a somewhat different way of dressing in our maids. They wear a lighter dresses as their job demands. It won’t be convenient for them to wear all-covering Hijab dresses on the job. That is why, the addressees of Awrah are ladies.

This is an overall way of gradual teaching in Islam. Social matters are addressed one by one in a gradual way. The institution of slavery was being minimized on the other hand through different measures mentioned in Quran and Ahadith.

“Allaah will not accept the prayer of a woman who has started to menstruate, except with a khimaar (covering)” (Reported by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, Ibn Maajah and al-Tirmidhi, with a saheeh isnaad)

Also this hadith which says that adult women’s prayers will not be accepted unless she wears a khimar (headscarves), Ghamidi Sb. (ha) on the other hand said that these are just etiquettes of Salah, but they should not be taken lightly. All these hadiths are somehow opposite of Ustad Ghamidi Sb.’s (ha) teachings. So that’s why i want to understand the contexts and authenticity of these hadiths.

@Irfan76 Why our beloved Prophet (sav) said that Women is Awrah?

Khimaar is the name of the veil or Chaadar, not necessarily to use to cover the head only. It is used the way women use it, sometimes on the head, and sometimes on the chest.

To us, hadith is not an independent source to extract some Ahakamat from. The injunctions in Ahadith must depend upon the Quran and the perpetual Sunnah. The prophet’s sayings, therefore, belong to the etiquettes of prayer, not an addition to something Farz.

The woman is supposed to be well-covered in all civilizations. A woman’s covering is always considered more than that of men. In this case, a woman is to be Awrah or the one who should be well covered. However, it does not include face covering or head covering or kept hidden in the houses. head-covering is a cultural etiquette.
