Is Animal Skin Impure? Is It Necessary To Tan To Make It Pure?
Assalaam aleykum
A goat was given in charity to Maymunah’s maid. The goat died. [It so happened that] the Prophet (sws) passed by. [Seeing the dead goat], he said: “Would that you had taken its hide, tanned it and then made use of it.” People said: “It is a dead animal.” At this, the Prophet declared: “Only eating it is forbidden”
This hadith i copied from the book “Mizan” (hadees is written in the group “The dietary shari’ah” ) of sir Javed ahmed ghamidi.
I read also some other hadiths but can’t give you reference.
Here are links of 2 of the sites where i read hadiths about tan/tanning:
https://ahadith.co.uk/chapter.php?page=7&cid=191&rows=10
And https://alshariah.wordpress.com/2009/06/06/the-issue-of-using-skins-of-animals-for-tanning/
( i didn’t know what does it mean ) so i searched and it’s a process used while making leather.
I have a question:
Is untanned animal skin impure ? Does it has to be tanned to become pure? Does it has to undergo this process to become pure? Or it is pure anyway ?
Please answer my question
