    Assalaam aleykum

A goat was given in charity to Maymunah’s maid. The goat died. [It so happened that] the Prophet (sws) passed by. [Seeing the dead goat], he said: “Would that you had taken its hide, tanned it and then made use of it.” People said: “It is a dead animal.” At this, the Prophet declared: “Only eating it is forbidden”

This hadith i copied from the book “Mizan” (hadees is written in the group “The dietary shari’ah” ) of sir Javed ahmed ghamidi.

I read also some other hadiths but can’t give you reference.

Here are links of 2 of the sites where i read hadiths about tan/tanning:

    https://ahadith.co.uk/chapter.php?page=7&cid=191&rows=10

    And https://alshariah.wordpress.com/2009/06/06/the-issue-of-using-skins-of-animals-for-tanning/

( i didn’t know what does it mean ) so i searched and it’s a process used while making leather.

    I have a question:

Is untanned animal skin impure ? Does it has to be tanned to become pure? Does it has to undergo this process to become pure? Or it is pure anyway ?

    Please answer my question

From materialistic point of view, skin can be impure becuase it has fats on internal layer and impurity on outside. Wearing it without proper cleaning may causedermal adsorption. I can understand why it would have been advised to tan the skin first.
Perhaps @Irfan76 sb or @UmerQureshi sb can give a better explanation

It is pure but not clean. To tan is to clean it and get ready to use.

      Thank you a lot sir.

But i have some confusion, please help me.

If the skin of any animal is not najis (impure), then why there is tanning mentioned in the hadiths?

Like i heard 2 hadiths from Fariq Naik (son of Dr. Zakir Naik) hadith is : Any skin that is tanned, it is pure.

Another hadith which he mentions is : tanning, it is purity for the skin.

Here is the link : https://youtu.be/FRUgMWsDSbw

There is another hadith in sahih muslim (I have heard this from Sheikh Yasir Qadhi) hadith is : If the skin has been tanned, it becomes pure.

He mention another hadith in the video (link below), hadith: Any skin that has been tanned becomes tahir.

Link of the video of Sheikh Yasir Qadhi : https://youtu.be/nDC8_13CKXY

And if the skin of any animal is not najis (impure) then why Sheikh Yasir Qadhi (like in the video that i have tagged) and other muslims says that if it is not tanned than it is Impure?

      Like:

      https://youtu.be/nDC8_13CKXY

There are also other muslims that says that it has to be tanned to use it if the animal dies

      Please answer this question too.

      Thanks a lot ❤️

We go with the principle and interpret the hadith in the light of the principle. The words of Hadith are not Hujjah as they are indirect quotes, not the actual words of the prophet.

A thing is najas only if it is filthy. The filth is stool and urine. The blood is not najas but the spilled blood is an abomination to consume, as it is a beastlike act. Therefore, if the skin is filthy, it should be cleaned and usually, it is done with tanning. So it is not the tanning that makes the skin pure, but it makes it both pure if it is filthy and also clean. Therefore it is an overall comment to say that tanning makes skin pure.

Ok thank you a lot sir ❤️

I was confused because i heard or understood that tanning is a process that makes what is impure into pure.
