    Asselamu aleykum,

I’ve heard many times, that in Islam, one should only use the patrilineal tribe or caste, instead of matrilineal one.

My question is, does that ruling really apply? For example, if one’s father is American, while mother is British, is it prohibited for him to call himself a British?

    Kindly clarify.

    Thanks.

This is a cultural practice. Islam did not originate it nor has any objection to it.

So, one can recognize himself from his mother’s origins, right?

yes, it is a matter of choice. In Muslim history, there were many people who adopted their mother’s name like Ibn Maja the renowned Muhaddith and some took their daughter’s name like Imam Abu Hanifah.
