Delaying Obligatory Hajj To Look After An Old And Highly Dependant Parent
A relative is insisting on going to obligatory hajj while his father is totally dependent on him. So much so that his father needs help in getting up from the chair and bed.
He argues that he has been postponing it for a couple of years but, now he has to perform because it is Fardh given his financial status. Remember his father’s condition has also been the same and totally dependent on his son. Her mother passed away a few years ago.
He wants his married sister with kids to take care of their dad while he is away for 40 days. The sister will be under severe difficulty because of her own set of problems. He has been supporting her sister financially quite a lot and because of that she feels under the pump to openly discuss the hardships she would go through if the father lives with them for 40 days or so.
Now, can anyone please enlighten me on the principles of an obligation in islam. I mean when an obligation (fardh) becomes an unconditional obligation and you have to do it regardless of your circumstances?
Also, if possible refer Quran, Sunnah and Hadith to understand and find a solution of the problem.

It is not just the financial criterion that makes the journey to Hajj obligatory, but other factors too, like physical health and the arrangements to look after the ones who depend upon him. In the situation given above, the man’s foremost responsibility is to look after his father. If he can make arrangements that someone looks after him in his absence he can go, otherwise, he is not obligated to go to Hajj leaving his father unattended.
Let the person decide when he is able to go.
