If a Muslim unknowingly violates an Islamic law, what would be the punishment for such mistake, and would the punishment be the same if the individual had knowledge of the law beforehand?

Mistakes are not counted with God if it is done out of ignorance, but this ignorance must not be willing ignorance, in which one refused to know and deliberately avoids knowing, but should be an accidental one. Further, it should not be a violation of some ethical code, as ethical sense is a universal fact, which does not require one to know Islamic law.
