  • Why Doesn't Beard Come Under Sunnah Propagated By Prophet SWS

As Javed Ghamidi States that two sources of Deen are Quran and Sunnah, claims that all religious practices have come to us through consensus of ummah just like Quran. So, why can’t we declare Beard to be an established Sunnah as we know that all the religious scholars and mazhaib (maslak) consider it a Sunnah (irrespective of the it’s length). Similarly, all prophets had beard. It can be said beard has always been a part of Sunnah (religious practices). Moreover, it is innate or to say only natural habit for men to keep beard as it distinguishes men from men. Though some may say there are men with no proper beard, but still they have some sort of facial hair. Hence, why Ghamidi Sahb gives no religious significance to beards but a symbol of one’s love towards prophet Muhammad SAW

Letting the Beard grow and trimming the mustaches, was obligated by Prophet (sav), during his time only to distinguish the believers with the non-believers of that era, who used to let the mustaches grow and trim the beard, as a sign of arrogance, which is strongly prohibited in Islam. The prophet never commanded having the beard, on the basis of his Sunnah (Sunnah is the act of the Prophet, which he commanded to his ummah to do, as “Sunnah”). The only thing the Holy prophet (pbuh) commanded was that the looks should be decent. Now, especially in the civilized areas, no one trim the beard, in arrogance, but, to look decent, according to this era. In prophet’s era, the decency was to trim the mustaches and let the beard grow, to not look like an arrogant. If you want to make your looks, in accordance, with our Holy Prophet (sav) then, it’s very nice and appreciable. But, Beard is not included in the principles of Islam, in any way. (The clear example, the Ustad-e-Mohtaram give was of another modernist writer and philosopher, Dr. Allama Iqbal [ra], who was also the true lover of our dear Holy Prophet (sav). )

Please watch the video of Dr. Saleem Shehzed Sb. (ha), on beard.

What about the part where I mentioned it as a Sunnah of all prophets if it didn’t have any religious significance why didn’t any of the prophets or pious ppl in even other religions like that of Judaism didn’t shave their beard. Similarly, quoting Allama Iqbal carries to weight in this regard as he’s not hujjat to us nor was he Faqih or to say jurist i.e a person who can give rulings on religious matters. It was his personal choice not to keep beard while he kept mustache. All 4 great Fuqaha kept beard similarly highly regarded Companions of prophet kept beard. There’s whole consensus of keeping beard between Sunnis as well as Shia’s which are totally two different schools of thought. We know shia School of thought has a different history and different chain of narrations still they state it prophibited to completely shave off your beard

Brother, you didn’t understood what I wrote above. Yes all the prophets (as) had beard. Because, all the people had beards in the past, (they never commanded other people to have beard). But, the matter of the Prophet (sav) was different, in his times people used to grow the mustaches and trim the beard as a sign of arrogance. So, the prophet (sav) commanded the believers to trim the mustaches and let the beard grow to distinguish themselves, from the arrogant people, of that era. The prophet (sav) never commanded the Muslims to have beard as his Sunnah. Plus, Allama Iqbal, he was the lover of our Holy Prophet (sav), and was also the modernist thinker, like İmam Farahi (ra). I don’t know about the beliefs of Jewish people. Our references are the Glorious Qur’an and the Sunnah of our Prophet (sav). The hadiths should be watched in accordance with these references. And also, anything besides these, cannot add anything to the religion. As far as, the beliefs of our Shia Muslim brothers, is concerned please watch their own point on this regard. Thanks.
