  • Is Wearing Of Expensive Time-piece Such As A Rolex Or Omega Considered Haram?

Assalam u Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh!

I hope everyone is doing wonderful

I was watching Gamdhi sb’s video of wearing of gold for men.

My question is that if someone wears an expensive watch just to show off, will it be considered under same perspective of wearing gold by men?

    Part B

Can someone wear an expensive gold watch if he likes it and doesn’t intend for it to show off to other people?

This has to be decided by the person and cultural norms that a certain thing is or has become a thing to show pride or haughtiness or that it arouses haughtiness in him.

To wear an expensive watch or use an expensive car and the things like that are not exclusively used to show pride or haughtiness but indicate a person’s financial status and this is allowed. The prophet in his reply to a similar question said that God loves to see the traces of His blessings on the person and that God is beautiful and He loves beauty. However, if a person feels proud or haughty, which means he looks down upon others who do not have what he has, then it is for him not good to wear.

What if a certain thing is a symbol of pride in society and you have it but you have not intended to buy it for pride purposes?

Like if someone likes a gold ring or watch, normally society will think of him as a man of high social status and that person also knows that but he has intended to buy it just for hus sake because he likes it and don’t want to show off?

So to cut short, what if a certain thing is of boastful nature in society but that person doesn’t intend to use it for that purpose?

If a thing is considered in society as a symbol of pride or boastfulness, one needs to avoid it. This is what the holy prophet taught his companions. He disliked them wearing things of gold and clothes of silk and lowering the lower garments to cover to touch the ground, which was a way to show pride, although they might every well have good intentions.

A thing of pride (which needs to be avoided) should be a thing of pride or boastfulness to all, not to some segment of society or some people. Otherwise it would be just a sign of one’s status and this is not a problem.
