  • Nature Of Magic Performed By The Magicians In Pharoah'S Court

Was the magic performed by the magicians in the court of Pharoah as a challenge to Musa (AS) just a sleight-of-the-hand type magic or was it something that involved the use of Jinns? If it was the latter, what evidence do we have to specifically understand it as such? Ropes twisting could just be an optical illusion.

According to the language used in Quran 7:115-117, it appears that the kind of magic used by those magicians was an optical illusion of great proportions (belonging to the domain of Nafsi ulum).

What is meant by nafsi uloom? Is it psychology? There is something in Psychology called Suggestibility. But there are not many people suggestible (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suggestibility) and yet the people in the court all thought the ropes were twisting.

Do you mean it involved the use of the Jinns?

I do not think suggestibility is the right term for it. Nafsi ulum use full potential of the inner-self as opposed to the material existence. The same which is at times used by sufis in their experiences (at a much lower level) and its epitome can be seen in the incident of the man who brought the throne of Queen Bilqees to the court of Prophet Suleman hundreds of miles away in a matter of nano-seconds.

Usually they are divided in three categories:

      – the first category is Magic (optical illusions)

      – the second category is the kind of knowledge taught by Harut and Marut and by the person who brought throne of Queen Bilqees

      – The third category involves use of Jinns.

From Quran, the language used to describe the act of Magicians in Pharoah’s court indicate that it was more of an optical illusion (as explained in the video shared above) than an act involving use of Jinns.

      Details on Nafsi Ulum:

Do you mean the magic described here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_(illusion)?

Yes, something of this genre but the mechanics between these two may differ
