    Salam.

I understand that the Quran emphasizes on treating parents well and taking care of them, but there is a line at which parents go from parents to oppressors.

If one has parents that were/are extremely emotionally abusive to the point where the child now has serious mental illnesses such as BPD or PTSD, would it be wrong to separate yourself from them? The materialistic things would obviously be returned to them in due time but there is no possibility for a healthy relationship with them.

Also, in the hereafter, provided both the child and parent are made eligible for Jannah, would Allah (SWT) force them to be together even though the child would just like to be away from their oppressors? Would the child be allowed freedom to be alone and by themselves, far away from the people who abused them?

    JazakAllah!

Islam does not force children to be present in the service of their parents all the time. It instructs them to deal with them in a good manner. Now in what way they should be treated is up to the children. They may separate themselves from them and still take good care of them according to their means and capacity.

Keep it in mind, that children are not obliged to “obey” their parents but asked to be good with them. it does not mean they should disobey them but it means they may disagree with them if they feel they are justified but still being a son and a daughters, one is obliged to do good with them according to one’s means and capacity.

In Jannah Allah has told us that one will get what one desires. secondly, we are told that grudges and enmity will be no more in the hearts of the inhabitants of the paradise.
