  • Does Quran Indicate Losing Of Good Deeds Because Of A Major Sin Except Kufr

    Hello there, assalaam u alaikum.
my question is that there’s a hadith that says
    Sahih al-Bukhari 553
    Narrated Abu Al-Mahh [??]:
We were with Buraida in a battle on a cloudy day and he said, “Offer the Asr prayer early as the Prophet said, "Whoever leaves theAsr prayer, all his (good) deeds will be annulled.”
PS. i am not sure whether the real word of “all deeds” is used or just “deeds” is used in real Arabic script, because I’m not aware of Arabic Grammer. but when I used translation it didn’t say “all” deeds as is written in this translation. so please make sure what are the real words
coming to the question, does any sin other that real blatant Kufr also cancels out some good deeds? is this idea supported by Quran? I’m not talking about Kufr, other sins than kufr, like missing a fast or Zina. if it is done, does Quran gives an idea that they would lose some good deeds?

Istikbar (‘arrogance‘) is an attitude which renders a person ineligible for Jannah as per Quran 7:40-41, but this attitude does not exist in isolation, instead it transforms into action and manifests itself in the form of different sins, and three of those primary sins have been mentioned in Quran 25:68-69 namely, polytheism, murder and fornication. Similarly, there is warning of eternal hell if one usurps someone else’s share of inheritance in violation of Quranic guidelines as per Quran 4:13-14.

Therefore, if a person is involved in these sins, then he should repent sincerely in this life, because that is the only condition for saving oneself from eternal punishment. Which means that if the case against a person is proved and he is proven guilty on the day of judgement then he may face eternal Hell as a punishment for certain Major sins which logically means that all good deeds will be lost in those cases. All the punishments are a warning by nature, hence they are not binding on Allah the way his promises are binding on him, rather they are subject to the will of Allah.

@UmerQureshi sir so in this ahadith it is said that if someone doesn’t pray asr namaz then he has done kufr? because this hadith says his deeds are lost. if someone once a time didn’t pray an asr prayer because of being tired or laziness, then he’s doing kufr? like a blatant Kufr? similar to the one who refuses to believe in prophet?

Missing Salah intentionally is definitely a sin and depending on the intention of the person, it could be Kufar as well. But it is for God to decide. However, missing Salah intentionally during the time of Prophet Muhammad (Sws) after itmam-e-hujjat was declared an indication of Kufar in Quran 9:5.

@UmerQureshi so sir if someone at the time of prophet missed one Salah of asr due to laziness or some weak excuse. would he have been termed a kafir?

After Quran 9:5, if they refuse to offer Salah or refuse to pay zakat then they were to be killed.

Regarding excuse, we already discussed it here:
