  • Designing An Ad That Promotes A Casino

The ad is created with a lot of time spent on it but now the designer realized that the hotel, for the most part is halal but has got a casino as one of its main features. The designer didn’t include casino in the ad but the client most probably will later on edit the ad and include the casino but nevertheless the ad is promoting a hotel that has something haram as on of important elements regardless of if that feature is being promoted or not but the hotel is being promoted. The designer wants to discard that ad and doesn’t care of about loss of his own time or money because he doesn’t want to involve in anything haram, however, the client’s rights are being violated that he spent so much time on it also and is not the primary client but a secondary one who has taken a contract with that hotel. The client is very upset and stressed due to this.
What should be done in this case?

What the client does with the ad is client’s own responsibility. The designer is only accountable for their own actions. Once the principle is understood the designer can apply it to their situation and carry out accordingly.

Thanks for the answer sir, I understand what you meant here but there is another aspect that I think you missed. I said that the hotel has a casino as one of its main features and the ad is promoting that hotel. Even though it doesn’t contain the promotion of that feature but it is promoting that hotel which has that feature. What’s your view on this?

Oh okay, thanks 🙂 btw, it would be great if you could give me the thought process behind why it would be considered lawful to promote something that on its own is halal but an important part of it is haram.
Like, for example, I am working on a website that is about promoting a tool which primarily is very good and technologically advanced thing but a feature of it is integration with chatgpt which is one of their selling points. People are suing chatgpt because their personal data is being stolen as the people interact with it and ask personal questions, and also many authors have claimed that chatgpt is infringing their copyrights, which is not proven yet so there is a fear that it might be taking away their rights

So far ChatGPT is a completely legal. It is not our job to figure out the legality of something; that task belongs to the legal experts. If they decide that ChatGPT steals people’s data or infringes upon the copyright of content creators then they will deal with it in a manner that is appropriate. Just because some people have claims against ChatGPT does not make it illegal or unethical.

We are only accountable for our own deeds. If we have a sound basis to believe that something is illegal or unethical then we should certainly not get involved in it. Also if something is clearly haram then we should stay away from it. The rest of the things are permissible by default. However, we might have personal preferences in these things and there is no harm in taking those preferences into account.
