  • What Exactly Is A Lie? Concept Of Lie

    Hello there assalamualaikum,

What is the concept of lie? what is it’s reality?

is lie which we say is Islamically Haram/accountable, is it merely speaking words that we say in order for the listener to dwell into a scenario which is not true? then in this regard there’s no difference between a lie and a diplomatic statement (Tawriya). Because at a base level, both are words that are spoken with active intention of making the listener dwell into a fake scenario.

but if there’s another condition added to it before it is called a lie which is Haram/accountable, that is, that the thing mentioned above is done in order to do wrong to someone. then it would entail that a lie (or a Tawriya) to comfort a distressed child or a friend to keep his heart might not be accountable, but a lie (or Tawriya) to give disavantage in trade would be accountable.

level 1 : Saying/doing something deliberately (actively intending) to make the other dwell in an untrue scenario

level 2 : doing ‘level 1’ with either a good or a bad intention. doing it with either morally wrong reason or right reason

in a nutshell, if Islamically lie is just level 1 then Tawriyah and Lying are exactly same. both would have same Islamic ruling of being Haram, the only thing left would be, if it was justifiable or not, by looking at level 2 . BUT, if Haram lies in doing level 1 in order to wrong others. then it would entail that a lie or Tawriyah for a good purpose is Halal?

There are no Islamic separate criteria to judge something a lie or tawriah. Since Tawriah is not a blatant lie, no matter if it resembles in results with the outcome of a lie, it is still not a lie.

A lie is allowed to avoid big harm, not for trivial benefits, however, Tawriah is allowed.

@Irfan76 sir what I meant as a result was not that the result of them turns out to be similar (which is the other person dwelling on a wrong information), this can happen even if someone is fully trying to tell a truth, still unintentionally the audience can understand otherwise. what I meant was as a result was an active intention to mislead someone to a wrong information, which is found in both Tawriyah and lie.

so sir even if that active intention of leading someone to dwell in the wrong information is present. if it is done for trivial benefits while it doesn’t cause harm, then such thing is only allowed in the form of Tawriyah, but not in a lie. further than that it can be also done in the form of a lie if there’s some dire situation. is this understanding correct?

Yes. A dire situation means Iztiraar.
