    Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Two voices are cursed in this world and in the Hereafter: a flute at a time of celebration, and wailing at a time of calamity.”Source: Musnad al-Bazzār 7513

    Nothing is forbidden unless there is something morally and ethically objectionable. In the time of the prophet music too was played in the celebrations where objectionable things were performed. So he condemned them. It is just the way we forbid our kids from cricket or video games, not because cricket or video games are harams but because they may cause a waste of time and energy. So flute is not haram but if it is played in a celebration where objectionable things are being done, it is discouraged.

    To mourn death is natural but wailing and complaining are not desirable obviously.
