  • Narration Of One Tabiah Covering Her Face After Quoting Quran 24:60

Asim al-Ahwal said: We used to enter upon Hafsah bint Sirin who had put her jilbab thus and covered her face with it, and we would say to her: May Allah have mercy on you. Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): “And as for women past childbearing who do not expect wedlock, it is no sin on them if they discard their (outer) clothing in such a way as not to show their adornment” [al-Nur 24:60]. And she would say to us: What comes after that? We would say: “But to refrain (i.e. not to discard their outer clothing) is better for them”. And she would say: That is confirming the idea of hijab. (Narrated by al-Bayhaqi, 7/93)

This narration is reported by Bayhaqi in his Sunan Al-Kubra, Number 13534, 7/150 (دار الكتب العلمية، بيروت – لبنان) and the chain is classed Sahih by Shiekh Albani in Jilbab al-Mara-tal Muslimah, Page 110 (Dar-ul-Islam Al-Nashar, Third Edition).

Hafsah bint Sirin was a very pious Tabiah (تابعة) who died in the year 101 AH and lived for seventy years. This narration points towards Hafsah bint Sirin’s great sense of chastity and modesty. What she was wearing was enough, but still she felt uncomfortable and she wanted to cover her face too, which was not obligatory. Her understanding of Quran 24:60 seems to be different because it appears that she included face in that directive as well and took “Saiyyab” in the meaning similar to how its been used in “Jilbab” verse in Surah Ehzab verse 59 instead of how its been used in “Khimar” verse in Surah Nur verse 31. While scholars hold two different views in this regard.

You can read further commentary of this narration in English rendering of the book by Shiekh Albani (relevant pages attached).
