Are Present Muslim States Islamic?
Assalamualaikum,
Are present day muslim states Islamic?… if not, why ?… even when there political system is democratic and they comply with all the terms determined by nation state principles…such as…non muslims are at equal footing, freedom of speech and faith…no punishment thereof…etc.

There is no concept in Islam of an Islamic State. If a state is run by Muslims they are required to adopt Shariah for their collective matters too. The principle of the political system in Islam is Shura, that is consultation, and democracy is its present form. As far as laws are concerned, the provisions are there in many countries that the criminals might be punished according to the shariah but Muslims masses usually do not go to Shariah courts to decide their matters in the light of shariah except for the social shariah like nikah, talaq and inheritance .
