According to the below mentioned Islamic sources it was normal’and accepted in society to witness gender interaction and sitting with the other gender having meals and so forth
But after the revelation of hijab verse in Al ahzaab this tradition was eradicated by male & female companions

The Quran has made it clear that gender interaction is not prohibited because it has given a set of manners for gender interaction. There would be no need for manners if gender interaction was not allowed. Gender interaction never ceased in society under the holy prophet. For details, you may consult the book by Dr. Mazhar Yasin Siddiqui, Rasul e Akram awr Khawateen aik Samaji Mutala.
