In Qur’an, there were many widows after many Muslims died in the battlefield. Verse 4:3 is Allah asking Muslims to take a 2nd, 3rd or 4th wife because the time needed it to support these widows and their children who lost their fathers.
That is an example of need. Other need could also be the first wife has trouble producing children so another woman might be needed. Ghamidi Sahab also gave example of old time where people needed a lot of children to survive and form tribes, so multiple wives were needed. Prophet PBUH himself needed to marry women to establish relationship with tribes. These are some examples where polygamy is useful and needed.
