AsalamAlaikum. Zakat is 2.5% on assets & savings. 10% on income that comes purely from a provided service and 10% on income that is earned solely from returns made on an investment without any provided service. While if the income is generated via both service and an investment, it is 5%. Which category does an income from freelancing services come under? Should it be considered purely a service/a normal job where a person uses the resources of an employer & provides a service? Or should it be considered a mixture of both since the freelancer does provide a service but invests in the computing equipment, its maintenance, the internet bill and the electricity bill, which in a normal job are all provided by the employer? I am a little confused in this regard. Any help or direction would be really appreciated. Thank you and JazakAllah!

Proper freelancing work can be considered a combination of both investment and labour i.e. which involves creation of a dedicated workspace including investment in laptop or a specialized laptop and office/room etc. and business expenses like electricity, internet etc.
