    Dear,

It is claimed that there is ijmah on the issue of the hijab (headscarf). Are there some classical scholars who have considered the headscarf not obligatory? Can you kindly provide references? Thank you very much.

There has always been difference of opinion on this issue right from the opinions of Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas and Abdullah bin Masood on the interpretation of the words Illa Ma Zahara Minha, that what stays exposed, need not to be covered, from sira Noor verse 31. Abdullah bin Abbas was of the opinion that it means that a woman can expose her face Ans hands with adornment I’m them while ibn masood said that this exception is only of the clothes and chaadar on thr clothes. Ever since there is no consensus on hijab of face.

As far as head covering is concerned it has not been discussed by the classical scholars as a problem as it was never an issue to be raised. They just mention that the women used to wear hijab on their heads too. But they do not mention that it is due to a directive of God. See for example the first tafseer, Tabri.

Thank you, the reference given by Tabari, is it in context of sura 24:31?
