  • Specification Of The Term ‘Muhajir’ For The Muslims Who Migrated To Medina

    Assalamu Alaikum,

Many Urdu-speaking people (whose grandparents immigrated from various parts of present-day India to Pakistan) call themselves ‘Muhajir’ in Karachi and other areas of Sindh. Also, immigrants from various parts of the Ottoman Empire to Türkiye called themselves ‘Muhacir’.

My question is, Is that wrong? And was the term only specified for the Muhajirun from Mecca to Medina during the era of the Holy Prophet (saw), or any Muslim immigrant can use the term as their identity?

Muhajir is a general term used for the immigrants. For the same reason it was used for the immigrants among the companions.of the prophet. It is not specified to them.

Can the descendants of Muhajirs from India (who were born in Pakistan) use the term for themselves as well? I.e Can the term be used for the particular nation as an identity, such as the term ‘Punjabi’ is used for the inhabitants of the Punjab region?

Also, Did the children of those Muhajirun from Mecca used the same term for themselves?

Did the second generation of those Muhajirun, who immigrated from Mecca to Medina along with Prophet (saw), also used this term for themselves?
