  • Hadith On Camel’s Urine Being Considered Medication

Posted by Muhammad Sahi on November 28, 2024 at 10:10 pm

Salam. I wanted to ask about the authenticity of the hadis in sahih al-bukhari 5686 which says that the prophet Muhammad pbuh recommended camel’s milk and urine as medication for an illness to two travellers.

This doesn’t make a lot of sense to me given the fact that urine is known to be unclean and full of bacteria and viruses, because it’s stuff that the body gets rid of.

Overall, it just doesn’t make any sense, because sure some substances in camel’s urine can have medical use but the hadis says that the urine was added to the milk, which means it wasn’t processed.

Overall, I’m quite skeptical about this hadis and I’m happy to get the chance to ask about it.

There are medicines which uses animal urine for medicine such as Premarin. Moreover, Kopi Luwak and Black Ivory Coffee are loved by people too.

For Hassan Ilyas comment on said hadith please see Discussion 58289

I looked into it and Premarin is estrogen extracted from horse urine. Similarly, kopi luwak and black ivory coffee are both made coffee beans excreted from animals but the excreted beans are cleaned before being roasted.

In the case of Premarin, there’s a difference between extracting something from horse urine and the actual horse urine.

Lastly, and this is something I forgot to say before, there’s an exact version of this hadis except that it only says camel’s milk, excluding camel’s urine, in sahih bukhari book 76 Hadith 8 that’s actually right before the version with camel urine, which is book 76 Hadith 9.

My point is that only one of these hadis can be correct, both both. It’s not possible for the prophet to say both camel’s milk and camel’s urine and also only camel ‘s milk. I personally think that book 76 hadis 8 is the correct one because it makes more sense to have camel’s milk for an ailment rather than mixing it with camel’s urine too, which would be filled with bacteria and viruses.

Regardless, I look forward to hearing your reply and I thank you for your time.

My point was that it is possible to use urine for medicinal purposes in ancient medicine. Please check this for that point. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2011/mar/10/unusual-uses-of-urine

Regarding Hadith, one provide more information than other. They are not technically contradictory.
Hence For understanding hadith, Ghamidi sb uses all variants of similar hadith to reach the conclusion which is answered in the video of Hassan Ilyas sb or the link given by Umer sb.

I will also suggest to u to read Sajid sb article on same topic. https://www.javedahmedghamidi.org/#!/ishraq/5e2a854bab8876ef580c36c7?articleId=5e2a94a4ab8876ef580c37a0&decade=2020&year=2023

There’s no scientific proof for camel’s urine holding any medicinal purpose and the article only talks about old methods with no scientific backing, which are no longer used because they were never good in the first place. Prophet Muhammad wouldn’t give advice that would become outdated.

Also, the two hadis do contradict because either prophet Muhammad pbuh said both urine and milk or he said only milk, it can’t be that one adds to the other because thats just an assumption. Also, both hadis can’t be sahih, only one can, hence why they’re contradictory. Only one can be correct, which means only 1 can be sahih.

It’s pretty obvious that the one with camel urine is a fabrication because it makes more sense for camel’s milk to be good for you rather than a mixture of milk and urine or putting the urine on the skin, which again has no scientific backing. I mention scientific backing because prophet Muhammad’s advice still stands today ie dates being full of energy or misvak being a scientifically backed method of cleaning your teeth.

I don’t understand why people don’t want to consider this hadis as fabricated. There are many hadis which aren’t correct ie the one which says hazrat Ayesha was married at 9, and many others which directly contradict each other ie some hadis say hazrat Suleiman had 6 wives while others say 70, 80,90…

Anyways, I want to ask if you bring up the point to Hassan Ilias and Ghamidi Sagan that there’s sahih bukhari book 76 hadis 8 and 9 which are almost identical except one says camel’s milk and urine while the other says only camel’s milk, because I want to hear their response. Thank you.
