I know in the Quran it says “Lawful to you is the game of the sea and its food, a provision for you and for the travelers, and the game of the land is forbidden to you so long as you are on pilgrimage, and be careful of (your duty to) Allah, to Whom you shall be gathered” 5:96. However, I see in the Islamic community people sometimes take a different stance on this. For example, the Hanafis don’t see everything from the sea as halal. Also, would we interpret seafood differently from others, for example, crabs are considered seafood, but do come out of the water and is able to survive outside of the water. Would that still in Islamic Law make it considered as game of the sea.

I think it would be under the usul of tayyibaat being halal and khabaith being haraam. So the fitrah would distinguish things like shark being carnivorous and predatory therefore something not to eat
