If it is merely written to discredit or defame anyone, irrespective of religion, then a conscious Muslims should avoid it. But if one is reading western philosophy or Atheism and their point of view, then following principles should be kept in mind while approaching such literature:

    JazakAllah brother.

What if it is written by Muslim poets. Many of these poems are by them,We dont know exactly what they meant,so can we read other poems by them or avoid a certain poet completely.

Usually poets do exaggeration in their poetry by using certain metaphors and analogies, and sometimes they do cross certain bounds. However, if such transgressions are very rare, then there is no need to not read a good poet altogether based on one or two such transgressions, one can simply avoid that kind of poetry. But if a poet has solely dedicated his efforts in writing transgressional poetry only, then it’s better to avoid such readings. At the end of the day, it is up to the individual to reach such decision after reviewing the available content or based on his/her experience.
