I recently watched a documentary on Youtube where a researcher was claiming that Makkah is not Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) birthplace.

Furthermore, he theorized that the actual city that is referred to in the Quran was the ancient city of Petra in Jordan and the Qibla is not the Kabbah but in reality should be Petra.

Another fact he shared was that archaeologists have not found any traces of vegetation (trees, etc.) in Makkah and the land is barren. As such a lot Hadith’s that mention gardens and trees for example actually were referring to Petra as Makkah and it’s surrounding areas were infertile. Also, it was stated in the documentary that there is no place named Makkah in historical maps.

I just wanted to know what others thought about this claim which puzzled me tremendously. How can muslims refute such claims with historical evidence?
