  • Effect Of Etiquettes On Salah

Posted by Haseeb Faisal on February 1, 2022 at 2:48 pm

    Asalamualaikum,

Do etiquettes of prayer have any effect on the validity of prayer? Or does this depend on the etiquette in question?

For example, in this thread (Discussion 51595) it is stated that coming to the mosque after having eaten onion and garlic “in no way means that person’s salah will not be accepted”. In this case, it seems as though etiquettes have no bearing on the validity of prayer whatsoever.

However, in this thread (Discussion 31359) on namaz attire, the wording seems more cautious with regards to the validity of prayer when etiquettes are not being followed: “but if at some point, because of certain conditions, whether social or otherwise, any of these requirements cannot be fulfilled despite the person trying his/her best, then Insha’Allah Salah will be accepted.”

How can I reconcile both statements? Are there some etiquettes that are moreso encouraged than others to the point that they can have a bearing on the validity of prayer?

Please let me know if I’ve misunderstood!

    JazakAllah!

Based on this thread (Discussion 61424) featuring Ghamidi Sahab’s video, my understanding was that etiquettes do not have any bearing on the validity of prayer.

As a one-liner principle, etiquettes do not affect validilty of Salah from a legal stand-point.

But since etiquettes are an integral part of us humans in every social spehere, therefore, it is difficult to assume a situation where such etiquettes are neglected by human beings intentionally when it comes to their relationship with God. Therefore, sometimes to portray importance of such etiquettes for humans w.r.t their relationship with God, the same statement is said with some caution.

    JazakAllah Mr. Umer Qureshi,

That makes sense. However, there are some etiquettes that don’t really make sense to me. For example, I asked the follow question on the Al Mawrid website: https://www.al-mawrid.org/Question/61f2acf1757c641cedccfcf2/folding-long-sleeves-before-prayer-

To me, praying with folded sleeves does not really appear to be something that reflects poor etiquette. So, am I allowed to use my discretion in these matters?

And if I don’t observe an etiquette out of forgetfulness, do I have to do sajda-e-sahw?

    JazakAllah

You can use your discretion, but that discretion should have some sound basis in your head. For example, in formal setup, would you meet people or your boss with folded sleeves? One should consider all these factors before using discretion w.r.t etiquettes in front of Al-Mighty. But these are still etiquettes which will not affect legal validity of one’s Salah.

There’s no need for Sajda-e-Sehaw in this matter. But if you one wants to do Sajda-e-Sehaw for their satisfaction, then there’s no reason to stop them from doing that either.

      JazakAllah Mr. Umer Qureshi,

You definitely have a point about the folded sleeves.

So, would it also be better to be dressed well before praying every time? For example, not wearing pyjamas during Fajr or Isha prayers? But again, this wouldn’t have an affect on prayer.

      JazakAllah

No list can be provided in this regard in black and white.

As long as the person thinks they’re wearing a decent dress, they can pray in that dress.

      JazakAllah,

But I think that a night suit is a decent dress, but I wouldn’t wear it in front of my boss. At the same time, it’s very inconvenient to have to change into my best clothes in the early hours of the morning or night. Do you know what I mean?

If it’s decent for you then it is decent.

Boss example was just to ponder over the sleeves issue.

If one is already wearing half-sleeves decent dress in front of Boss, then full-sleeves issue doesn’t apply.

      I think I understand now.
