    As salamualaikum,

    Ghamidi sir mentions that :

Sunnah is practically transferred in muslim generations.

    And

Hadith is the historical record of prophet muhammad (saw).

    My question is :

Nowadays many customs, non- islamic practices are now involved in muslim generations, so should they also considered sunnah ?

So, eventually we will have to look at reference and that reference is hadith.

At this point hadith becomes the source of sunnah.

Then why such difference in terminologies ? when the end result is the same.

    Wa salam.

No hadith does not become a source of sunnah. Please refer to threads:

Historical records are of two kinds: first one comes from ijma known as established history and the second one comes from akhbar-i-ahad in the form of historical narrations. The former becomes an independent source of knowledge while the latter does not. Sunnah belongs to the former category which can also be traced back to Prophet Muhammad (sws) and Sahaba (rta) through Ijma of Muslim’s knowledge in every century and perpetual practice of Muslims supplement that Ijma. Fiqh books of every generation are incorporation of that Ijma and tawatur just the way a dictionary incorporates ijma and tawatur of any language. Other historical narrations or ahadith can be used to supplement that ijma and tawatur but they cannot substitute that ijma and tawatur. Our classical jurists make this distinction very clearly.
