    Asselamu aleyküm,

Is there any specific (or confirmed) criminal penalty for consumption of Alcohol in Islam, that can be adopted in Islamic Shari’a?

    Sahih al-Bukhari

    Volume 8, Book 81, Number 769:

Narrated ‘Hz. Ali bin Abi Talib (ra):

I would not feel sorry for one who dies because of receiving a legal punishment, except the drunk, for if he should die (when being punished), I would give blood money to his family because no fixed punishment has been ordered by Allah’s Apostle for the drunk.

This tradition from Hz. Ali (ra) seems to inform that there is no specific criminal penalty for consuming Alcohol in the İslamic law.

    Kindly clarify.

Yes, there is no prescribed punishment for the consumption of alcohol in Shariah. In the time of the prophet 40 lashes were administered, in the time of Umar, the second caliph, it increased to 80. Any suitable punishment can be adopted by the authority.

@Irfan76 Is it obligated to criminalize the consumption of Alcohol, or it’s desirable. Such as many Muslim-majority countries, including United Arab Emirates does not criminalize it [even for Muslims] for promoting tourism.
